How to Live was made for an exhibit at the Institute of Contemporary Art at MECA in Portland, Maine. The gallery's high ceilings allowed me to make a hanging scroll to be like a waterfall of words. The text is from Essays by Michel de Montaigne, his thoughts on how to live a good life. I colored yards of translucent polyester, wrote the words with dip pens and ink and mounted the five layers of fabric as a hanging scroll 13 feet long. Text and colors are visible in the layers like a palimpsest. Since many of us use a computer to communicate and to record, I added circles of gold binary code.
