Most of my books begin with the paper, preferably seconds of handmade paper so that each sheet is unique and quirky like this beautiful deep red paper by Hark! Handmade Paper. I wanted both brushstrokes and lettering and decided on a theme that would include words by various writers about poetry, language and scientific discoveries - wonder. The weaving was added to give more texture to the page and hint at a code before I knew what binary code was.
What is the wonder? What is the why and the how? What is that sound? How unbounded is the universe? I once touched a book 1,000 years old, who were you practicing letters like me believing words were magic, you would say holy. Bits and bytes now the new codes, finding and telling wonders beyond stars, magic beyond touch. Poets and artists interpret. JCO University of Miami Special Collections
