I thought about my Irish grandparents and read about what is required to become a US citizen. Included are the Naturalization Test questions, history of naturalization law, the Oath of Allegiance and the Pledge of Allegiance. To balance this are poems by Walt Whitman, Emma Lazarus, Woody Guthrie and words by Alexander Hamilton, James Maddison, George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. My memories are in small marginalia. I wanted to show the different facets of allegiance, of patriotism - admirable, yearned for, loud, quetionsable, complex.
